Every year during the golden summers, all those gentle Giants in the North Central province of Sri Lanka gathers up around the lush grasslands of ancient water tank, Minneriya, to sip the waters that’s left in the dried up water beds.
During the drought season starting from July to September, the Minneriya tank dries up flashing a fertile grassland for the neighboring wilderness. This is not a recent phenomenon, in fact this gathering has been happening for almost 2000 years.
The Largest of them all
The most magical and mind sizzling fact about the gathering is, that as the sun sets over the horizon, almost 300 elephants gather up to the tank beds not only to sip water, but also to play, socialize, bathe and even find their mates. Due to this, Minneriya Elephant Gathering is known as the largest Asian elephant gathering of the planet.
